Active Gloucestershire launches refreshed strategy to support healthier, happier lives across the county
City Works, Alfred Street, Gloucester, United Kingdom, GL1 4DF
Active Gloucestershire has launched a refreshed strategy setting out the charity’s priorities and approach for the coming years, as it continues to support people across the county to live healthier, happier lives through physical activity.
The new strategy reflects learning from the last four years, feedback from partners and communities, and an independent review commissioned in 2024. It responds to a changing landscape for physical activity, including rising costs, growing inequalities and increasing pressure on community organisations and public services.
Active Gloucestershire is one of 43 Active Partnerships across England, funded by Sport England and local partners. It acts as the backbone organisation for we can move – Gloucestershire’s movement that brings people and organisations together to support physical activity in everyday life.
While overall activity levels in Gloucestershire are improving, the refreshed strategy recognises that the benefits of being active are not shared equally. The organisation’s priorities continue to focus on tackling inequalities, supporting young people, helping people age well, promoting inclusive opportunities for disabled people and those with health conditions, and shaping active environments and places.
Rather than delivering activities directly, Active Gloucestershire works by inspiring action, connecting partners and enabling long‑term, community‑led change through learning, insight, training and practical support.
Kirsty Dunleavy Harris, CEO at Active Gloucestershire said “This refreshed strategy reflects what we’ve learned about where Active Gloucestershire can add most value as an organisation.
In this next chapter, we will ramp up our work with partners, system leaders and the Gloucestershire workforce, particularly through our Changemaker Programme – to create more opportunities for people to be active and to tackle the inequalities that still exist across our county.
By strengthening collaboration and focusing on long‑term change, we can help ensure more people benefit from the positive impact of physical activity.”
The strategy is available online and includes an interactive version that allows readers to explore it at their own pace.
