This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on something simple, powerful and often overlooked — the role physical activity can play in supporting our mental wellbeing.
At Active Gloucestershire, we believe that movement isn’t just about physical health. It’s about helping people feel good, build resilience, reduce stress and create space to reconnect with themselves. That belief shapes not only the work we do in communities, but also how we support our own team.
Creating Space for Wellbeing at Work
We know that looking after your mental health can be challenging, especially in busy working lives where time often feels limited. That’s why we’ve built wellbeing into our working culture.
Every member of our team is given a weekly wellbeing hour — dedicated time during the working week to do something that supports their mental and/or physical health.
This hour is intentionally flexible. It’s not prescriptive or performance-driven. Instead, it’s about giving people permission to step away, reset and focus on what they need in that moment.
Because wellbeing isn’t one-size-fits-all.
What “Fills Your Cup”?
Throughout the week, our team will be sharing how they use their wellbeing hour, alongside the everyday habits and activities that help support their mental health – or as many describe it, the things that “fill their cup.”
For some, that might be:
- Getting outdoors for a walk in nature
- Taking part in a fitness class or trying a new sport
- Spending quiet time reading or reflecting
- Connecting with friends or family
- Simply stepping away from screens and taking a break
For others, it’s about creating small moments of calm in otherwise busy days.
What matters most is not what the activity looks like – but how it makes you feel.
Why Physical Activity Matters for Mental Health
There is growing recognition of the strong link between movement and mental wellbeing. Being active can:
- Help reduce stress and anxiety
- Improve mood and energy levels
- Support better sleep
- Build confidence and resilience
But just as importantly, movement can offer something less tangible — a sense of space, perspective and control.
Even small amounts of activity can make a difference. It doesn’t have to be intense or time-consuming. A short walk, stretching, or simply getting outside can all contribute to improved wellbeing.
A Culture That Supports Healthy People
Providing a wellbeing hour is just one part of our commitment to creating a supportive, healthy workplace. It’s about recognising that people perform at their best when they feel well, valued and able to take care of themselves.
By normalising conversations about mental health and embedding wellbeing into the working week, we aim to create an environment where our team can thrive, both professionally and personally.
Join the Conversation
This week, we’ll be sharing stories and reflections from across our team. We hope these insights spark ideas, encourage conversations and remind others of the importance of taking time for their own wellbeing.
You don’t need a set hour or a specific plan to get started — just a small moment, a simple activity, or a conscious pause.
So, what fills your cup?
