Cheltenham. A Special Olympics taster day is being held on 23rd October 2018, between 9.30 and 3pm, at Leisure At Cheltenham to give local people with learning disabilities the opportunity to try a whole range of sports through the use of adapted techniques and equipment.
The event is being run by Active Gloucestershire and a county charity, whose aim is to encourage everyone to be active every day. It is being supported by Special Olympics Glos. Over a dozen adapted sports will be available to trial at the event, including: Archery, Boccia, Bowls, Cricket, Cycling, Gymnastics, Golf, New Age Curling, Snooker, Tennis and Rugby.
Daniel Brookes, Chairman of Special Olympics Glos and Community Coordinator of Cheltenham Trust said “It’s not just about an annual Sports Day or providing a competitive pathway for a few, we are about trying to provide a breadth of opportunity for participation and giving a sense of belonging for those with disability in Gloucestershire.
We welcome support from everyone including families, carers, sports clubs, NHS Service providers and local businesses. Everyone has a role to play in today’s society and we aim to give those who need a little help a chance to play theirs.”
The Special Olympics were founded in 1968, by Eunice Kennedy Shriver with the aim of creating a global movement for inclusion and community, where every single person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of ability or disability1 . In the last Summer Special Olympics Games in 2015, Great Britain sent over 115 athletes who earned 179 medals1.
