The Daily Mile Big Day

25,000 children take part in The Daily Mile Big Day

Over 25,000 primary children across the country took part in their own school’s Daily Mile on 18 October as part of a programme to get more children active.

The Daily Mile Big Day event involved a total of 130 schools across the county. The schools faced the challenge of very wet weather but they applied the flexibility of The Daily Mile, picking the best time of the day that worked for them and got the children outside.

The Daily Mile in Gloucestershire is part of a national initiative which supports schools to get children more active by encouraging them to jog or run 15 minutes every day. By encouraging schools to take part in The Daily Mile Big Day, we extend the engagement to children and young people who are inactive with a fun and inclusive way to include all their pupils in physical activity.

In the Cotswolds, North Cerney CofE Primary School was joined by the Councillor for Chedworth and the Churn Valley Ward, Jenny Forde, for The Big Day. Councillor Forde ran with the children encouraging them along. She said,

“Given the opportunity, kids love to run everywhere! This is a free, easily accessible way to use our natural assets and create good habits in our children. Ensuring their mental and physical fitness for life.”

In Gloucester, at St James’ CofE Primary School, Ms Vincent - a class teacher taking her class out for the Big Day event said,

“I take them out between math and English and I find that freshens their mind.”

The Daily Mile has been taking part in schools in Gloucestershire since 2016, and this new drive has engaged a further 46 schools to take part.

Schools that do The Daily Mile receive a welcome pack and a series of resources to support them in getting their children active.

Active Gloucestershire is proud to work with schools in Gloucestershire to set up and make The Daily Mile a part of every school day.

The Daily Mile Big Day is being organised by Active Gloucestershire in collaboration with the Daily Mile Foundation. For more information call 01452 393607 or email lisicottam@activegloucestershire.org for more information.
