‘We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing’
George Bernard Shaw
It is never too late to be active.
Unfortunately, it seems that when we reach 50 plus, we significantly reduce the amount of physical activity we do. In fact, it has been estimated that 4 out of 10 people aged over 50 take no physical activity at all. However, we need more physical activity as we get older, not less. This is because physical activity is the main way to slow down the decline in muscle strength – a common symptom of growing older.
Not participating in physical activity has been associated with a higher risk of:
- developing obesity
- heart disease
- high blood pressure
- osteoporosis
- depression.
Don’t get caught out by these things – physical activity is a great way to feel good and stay socially connected.
