Active Gloucestershire Coaching Bursary

The Active Gloucestershire Coaching Bursary will support an increase in the number of qualified coaches within the county as well as supporting those wishing to further their current qualification. The scheme will provide successful applicants, who undertake a National Governing Body of Sport (NGB) or UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) coaching qualification with a financial bursary in return for the delivery of coaching hours in Gloucestershire.

Please Note - The Coaching Bursary is currently closed due to allocating a large proportion of our funding for the year, please check back regularly as this may open again before April 2016. Any applications submitted will be kept on file.

Who can apply?

The funding is available to support coaches wishing to gain a NGB or UKCC level 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 coaching qualification. The bursary will not fund leadership awards or generic courses (e.g. sports coach UK workshops).

Applications can be made by a range of parties, including NGBs, Leisure Centres, Local Clubs, Local Authority Sports Development Teams, Local FE and HE Institutions as well as individual coaches.

Coaches who benefit from a bursary will be required to deliver coaching hours in Gloucestershire and provide evidence of where these will be completed. Further details are provided in Table 1.0:

How much can you apply for?

The Active Gloucestershire Coaching Bursary will fund 50% towards the cost of a NGB or UKCC coaching qualification and in most instances this will be up to a maximum of £500.00.  Transport, refreshments, equipment and any other additional costs will need to be covered by the applicant.

In most instances the applicant will need to pay the full cost of the bursary up front, however this may vary at the discretion of Active Gloucestershire.

How are applications assessed?

Each application will be assessed on an individual basis by Active Gloucestershire and in a majority of cases the National Governing Body of Sport will be contacted for further endorsement. Applications will be assessed against the criteria outlined above and the evidence provided within the application. Priority will be given to coaches who are delivering activity which is a focus for the NGB.

Once an application is received, the applicant will be sent an email confirming receipt of this and will be notified within 4 weeks as to whether or not this has been successful.

How often can you apply?

Individuals are eligible to receive only one award in any given financial year. NGB’s and other partner organisations may apply as frequently as required during a financial year as long as the recipient of the bursary is a different applicant on each occasion i.e. multiple applications from the same club will be eligible as long as the featured individual has not received a bursary within the last financial year.

Important Information

  • Grants cannot be awarded retrospectively. Therefore, bursaries will only be awarded to applicants wishing to attend courses that commence on a date after they have submitted their bursary application.
  • Applications submitted are not guaranteed to receive funding and are at the discretion of Active Gloucestershire. If you decide to enroll on / commence or complete a course before you are notified of Active Gloucestershire’s decision, you do so at your own risk.
  • For successful applications; Active Gloucestershire will only pay the allocated grant once applicants have completed their qualification and have evidenced their  delivery within a local setting through journaling hours on Connect 2 Coaching.
  • Active Gloucestershire will not pay a bursary to applicants that are accepted onto the programme and fail to complete the qualification or drop out of the programme. This includes any fees incurred by having to retake the qualification.
  • If there are currently no set dates for the coaching qualification you wish to undertake you are still eligible to apply for the Active Gloucestershire Coach Bursary.
