Welcome to our July newsletter.
It is now less than two years to go to the opening of the London Olympics on the evening of the 27th July 2012 and the big push for volunteers has started. You can find out more about the programme and how to become a 2012 volunteer in this edition.
Whilst we can all look forward to and eagerly anticipate the Games we cannot escape the current reality facing the many local partners and organisations providing sport and physical activity facilities, opportunities and programmes. Financial cuts on local authorities and changing political priorities make it even more important that we all work together to use resources wisely and, perhaps differently to, achieve best effect.
Active Gloucestershire is not immune to this and our Board has decided that we will separate from the University, which has generously hosted and subsidised us for several years, and become a social enterprise. From 1st November this year we will operate as a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. The Board believes that this will place the organisation in the best possible position to weather the adverse conditions that we are all about to experience when the results of the spending review are announced in the autumn.
We will communicate more about these changes and any implications later in the year but, fundamentally, you should not notice any significant change in how we operate.
In the meantime life goes on and you will find articles on a range of activities and events that are coming up in the weeks ahead as well as announcements about a number of forthcoming annual awards. If you think that you know someone whose contributions and achievements should be recognised why not take the next step and nominate them for consideration?
Best wishes for the rest of the summer

John Stevens
Chief Executive Officer
