Active Gloucestershire eNewsletter May 08

" Welcome to the May edition...

Spring may be slow in arriving but there is a real sense of things moving forward across the county and there are many examples of this featured in this newsletter. The establishment of Community Sport and Physical Activity Networks continues to progress and we anticipate that Stroud and Gloucester will soon be able to submit their action plan and funding application to Sport England.

Congratulations to Gloucester City on being selected to host the 2009 European Synchronised Swimming Championships. Hopefully this will be the first of many quality events that we will see hosted in the County in the run up to 2012.

Our Board met on April 24th (click here for a link to the minutes) and I am pleased to announce that our 2008 – 09 Business Plan has been approved (click here for a link to the Business Plan) and supported by Sport England. We still await news about Sport England’s future priorities and we expect to be able to comment in full in our July edition.

I hope that you find this edition helpful and please do not hesitate to contact us if you think that we may be able to assist you in your work".

Active Gloucestershire has updated its Equality Action Plan

In September 2007, Active Gloucestershire was awarded the Preliminary Level of The Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport. The award of the Preliminary Level means Active Gloucestershire is able to demonstrate it is developing as an organisation to understand the issues and barriers faced by under-represented groups, and that we have a robust Equality Action Plan which is reviewed regularly by the Board.

As a result of the plan, several key actions have been completed including:

  • CSPANs (Community Sport and Physical Activity Networks) established with representatives from priority groups, or with close relationships to them.
  • Introduction of a website funding section.
  • A number of Community Sports Coaches have a significant proportion of their delivery dedicated to priority groups, including the recruitment of a full time Inclusion Community Sports Coach.
  • Gloucestershire Disability Football Centre of Excellence established.

Ongoing achievements include over 2400 children receiving FUNdamentals & Multiskills coaching through the Active Start programme. The scheme is run from SureStart Centres which are based in some of the lowest socio-economic areas of Gloucestershire.

ASDA Sporting Chance

ASDA Sporting Chance

Launching summer 2008, this campaign will inspire thousands of children throughout the UK to get involved with sport. It has the backing of the key bodies in UK sport and delivers against Government’s ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda.

Responding direct to London 2012, the long term commitment will enhance community sport participation through to 2013…

Following a successful pilot in Manchester plans are currently being developed to roll the programme out across the country from Summer 2008. The campaign will run for the next 6 years and create a lasting sporting legacy for our young people. A number of leisure providers such as Greenwich Leisure Ltd, DC Leisure and Parkwood Leisure have already signed up, with a total of 50 private / public / trust-owned and LA (Local Authority) run organisations involved. However there is still the opportunity to be involved to fill gaps in delivery.

The commitment from leisure providers is to provide free child sport sessions in return for the Asda vouchers distributed in store.

The benefits for the providers are:

  • publicity and association in store and on the website
  • link with business in the community and access to Asda shoppers
  • contact details of the individual taking part in the sport to try and capture their long term participation in sport.
  • the long term nature of the campaign – every school holiday (excluding Christmas) up until 2013
  • first chance linkages and opportunities with the South West Regional Media campaign “Lets Go” being run by Sport England and the South West Media Group
  • potential volunteer opportunities in future years for Asda staff to help and join in and maybe even complete training courses to assist in delivery of the programmes

Local leisure providers already signed up to this campaign to offer "Try A Sport" sessions are GL1 and Oxstalls Tennis Centre. Other providers have been approached and are keen to get involved. If you are interested in this programme please email kfarr@glos.ac.uk at Active Gloucestershire to find out how to be involved.

A full list of leisure providers signed up to the campaign will be available on our website very soon, so keep looking to find out where you can get your free "Try A Sport" sessions from.

The trophy is in recognition of all the hard work that players, parents and volunteers have made towards raising the profile of tennis in the Forest of Dean. The thing I love about coaching tennis is that we try and make it as accessible as possible to all young people irrespective of ability."

Councillor Paul McLain, Cabinet Member for Young People, said: "Chris is a real star. This is typical of the 110% commitment he gives. I'm sure he'll be telling us he's discovered the next Andy Murray before long!"

Forest of Dean Sport Skillz

Active Gloucestershire and the Forest of Dean School Sport Partnership held their first holiday camp of the year entitled Sport Skillz on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th April at Heywood Community School. The camp covered a variety of sports and multi skills which proved an instant success with the participants involved.

The holiday camp, established by Active Gloucestershire’s Community Sports Coach Supervisor, Alison Croad, in conjunction with Heywood's Head of Physical Education, Pauline Brain, provided an inclusive sporting opportunity for children aged from 8 to 13.

The two days were coordinated by Alison and members of Active Gloucestershire’s Community Sports Coach team and provided the participants with the opportunity to receive professional coaching in sports such as football and athletics, as well as improve FUNdamental movements, such as Speed Agility and Quickness. The participants also had the chance to take part in activities such as Ultimate Frisbee and Tri-Golf. The Sport Skillz scheme was also responsible for coordinating a two day Gifted and Talented camp which involved the local primary schools nominating pupils who demonstrated a high level of performance in sport.

At the end of the action packed days parents were readily enquiring about future Sport Skillz holiday camps and said their children were “filled with enthusiasm.”

Sport Skillz will soon be coming to a venue near you. Please see our website www.activegloucestershire.org for future details!!

MEND

What is Mend? It stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition and …Do it! and is a project funded by Sainsbury’s and supported by 27 sports colleges throughout England.

The Forest of Dean Sports College at Heywood Community School became involved in the project after Director of Sport at the college Neal Cornish attended a conference. Neal signed up the Forest of Dean project with a clear vision of who he would ask to act as exercise trainer for the project and contacted Dave Lucas, Athletics and Multi Skills Community Sports Coach with Active Gloucestershire. Having fought a weight problem all his life, Dave saw this as a great opportunity to support young people with weight problems. The MEND mission is to enable a significant measurable and sustained reduction in childhood obesity. The target age groups would be years 6 – 8. After the first two projects were held at Heywood School the third one is being held at nearby Lakers School. The Forest of Dean District council have also supported the programme with facility use.

The programme is about positive changes, targets and rewards rather than targeting bad foods and "don’ts". It requires a good deal of commitment from the parents and children. There are two 2 hour sessions for 10 weeks. For the first hour the children are in the gym with the exercise trainer while the parents look at nutritional aspects. There is then an hour of target development with both children and parents, as well as quizzes and games relating to nutrition. The exercise section is based on TOPS multi skill activities. The aim is non-competitive ways of encouraging the children to enjoy sport, as most of them where not involved in much sport at school. The multi skill approach gives them the chance to develop individual sports skills. These skills can be used for a variety of activities. Everything is carefully planned so as not to risk disillusionment. The children worked on cheer leading routines, culminating in a display for parents on the final evening.

At the start and end of the project the children do a step test and various body measurements. The results are sent to Sainsbury’s for analysis. Both the previous projects' results have been positive. The measurement results remain personal to the parents and children. We also measure subjectively seeing the increase in fitness and more especially confidence.

Goalball Tournament

The last day of lectures in the Adapted Physical Activity module at the University of Gloucestershire saw students and staff battle it out in a Goalball Tournament at the Oxstalls Campus.

A brief background on Goalball:
Hans Lorenzen and Sepp Reindle developed this sport to help rehabilitate blind war veterans. Goalball is a three-a-side game played indoors with tactile markings on the floor. Each player will wear eyeshades to make it a level playing field and the ball used will have internal bells to locate it during play.

Goalball first appeared at the Paralympic games in 1976 and it is now played a cross the world and enjoyed by the visually impaired community, the sport in the UK is governed by the British Blind Sports (BBS).

High 5 Netball in Newent

Following on from a highly successful Young Netball Leaders Award held at Newent Community School, 10 Young Leaders are successfully supporting the 12 feeder primary schools with High 5 Delivery. The girls were extremely enthusiastic and organised a very successful tournament and coaching workshops for four of the larger local primary schools.

High 5

Netball High 5Due to the girls' continued support they are holding another two afternoons of coaching to ensure all of the primaries have a chance to experience some High 5 Netball. The young leaders are also planning after-school support and a festival for all 12 primaries to compete against one another at the end of the summer term.

The girls have worked really hard and are pushing for a High 5 Netball league to be established for the Newent primaries starting next academic year. Well done for all the hard work they have put in!

Wake and Shake in Children's Centres

Wake and Shake is an inclusive, accessible and effective physical activity for everyone to enjoy across a wide range of ages. The delivery does not require any extensive training and can be delivered by anyone and anywhere. Wake and Shake is being introduced into Children’s Centres across the County as part of the Active Start programme to increase the levels of physical activity for 0-5 year olds. In 1998, the Health Development Agency (formerly the Health Education Authority) published ‘Young and Active’. This document brought together all of the existing evidence in relation to physical activity and young people. From the evidence gathered it has now become apparent that young people require at least one hour of moderate physical activity each day. This can be an accumulation of activities over the day. Wake and Shake is an excellent way to contribute to this goal increasing the amount of organised physical activity in the Children's Centres and providing a fun additional burst of activity that can be performed in all weathers and settings.

Disabled Children have the Opportunity to Make a SPLASH!

Gloucester City Swimming Development, in partnership with Active Gloucestershire, has teamed up to launch a new swimming programme for children with a disability at the GL1 Leisure Centre.

The programme, which began on Wednesday 23rd April, is funded by ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) PESSCL (PE, School Sport and Club Links) funding and is the first programme of its kind in the South West of England.

The programme is for children between age 8 – 16 who can swim at least 25m unaided and will aim to improve every aspect of each child’s swimming, including stroke technique and endurance.

The eventual aim is to establish these sessions as an after-school club, linked to the county’s mainstream clubs. Coaches from mainstream clubs will have an involvement in the programme throughout, and may also invite individual swimmers to join mainstream clubs once they have achieved a high enough standard.

This programme is supported by Anna Lavan, Regional Talent Development Coach Disability Swimming, who described the project as: “An exciting programme which will hopefully produce future Paralympic swimmers. It is the first programme of its kind in the South West of England and we would hope to use it as a model of good practice within the counties and across the region”.

Inclusive Multisports / skills Programme

A new Inclusive Junior Multisports Club which will aim to encourage children with special educational needs to join in with sports and active skills alongside their siblings and friends, started on Wednesday 7th May at GL1 (click here to download the poster for more information).

The initial programme will be packed with fun exiting sports activities such as football, athletics, Boccia, Tri-Golf and multi skills activities.

Currently there is a focus on the development of both junior and adult based multisports clubs within districts of Gloucestershire, and Gloucester will now join Stroud and the Forest of Dean who already have similar multisports clubs.

These multisports clubs provide a good starting point for children with a disability to take part in sport and physical activity in the community. During the programme the participants will learn skills in different sports and might find a sport they want to pursue further, and the coaches involved in the programme will help make links with local sports-specific clubs.

Lansdown Ladies 1st XI Win the West Premier Hockey League

On Saturday 5th April 2008 Lansdown Ladies 1st XI drew with Team Bath Bucks to clinch first place in the West Premier League. Due to a restructure of the Slazenger England Hockey National League, teams winning their regional premier leagues were not automatically promoted and instead had to go to play-offs in order to play in the national league in 2008/09.

Lansdown Ladies 1st XI

Lansdown played their first play-off match at home (Bournside School, Cheltenham) on Sunday 20th April against the North winners Springfield UCLAN and unfortunately lost 2-0. The next step on the way to national league was a trip to North London to play South winners Southgate. Lansdown made a great start to the game but Southgate’s finishing was on-target and they put four past Lansdown with the game ending 4-1. The final stage of the play-offs took the team to the University of the West of England, Bristol to play the remaining three teams over May bank holiday weekend. Lansdown put their all into every game and played very well, but could still not get a point on the board after the first day losing 2-1 to Midlands side Matlock Baileans. On Sunday, playing for pride and knowing that qualification now wasn’t possible, they played Horsham who are fighting to stay in the National League and unfortunately after a hard fought 70 minutes lost 4-1. Going into the last and final day of the play-offs Lansdown played a very good game against East league winners Holcombe but unfortunately lost 6-1. The final table standings were:

Coach: Carolyn Rolleston, Manager: Kelly Farr.

Although it wasn’t a successful play-off competition for Lansdown, the awareness the girls have gained from playing teams at this level whilst experiencing the set up of the national league, has given them some 'food for thought' for the season ahead. Plans for pre-season training have already started for the 2008/09 season and the team will not let other teams in the league take points off of them that easily. They will fight once more to stay West Premier League Champions, which would mean automatic promotion to the National League at the end of the 2008/09 season. Lansdown 1st XI are now ready for the challenge!

Community Sports Coach Catch Up

Michael Squire

Mike Squire - Active Start Community Sports Coach (Full Time)

"Over the past month since the start of my employment at Active Gloucestershire I have had the opportunity to visit the Children's Centres in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Dursley, to gain an understanding of the fundamental role that Active Start plays in relation to physical activity. It has allowed me to start building relationships with the centres and their staff who I will be working with. This time has also provided me with the pleasure of shadowing some of the other Active Gloucestershire Community Sports Coaches in a wide range of different settings across the county. These settings included netball in Lydney, football in Cheltenham, various play schemes with Active Start, and the Ability Club for Everyone (ACE) at Stratford Leisure Centre, Stroud. These experiences have allowed me to gain an understanding of the role of Active Gloucestershire and the wide spectrum of activities it covers.

With the start of my new work programme rapidly approaching the opportunity to deliver sessions at the Children’s Centres arose in the form of play schemes over the holidays. I delivered two sessions, one at Gardners Lane Children's Centre and one at Rowanfield Children's Centre. Both were great experiences for what it will be like working at these centres on a regular basis, as well as the challenges I will face".

Philip Llewellyn - Active Start Community sports Coach (Part Time)

"Work started on the 17th March with an induction into Active Gloucestershire. In my first few days experienced Active Start Community Sports Coach Sarah Urquhart took me round the Children's Centres in Cheltenham and Gloucester and introduced me to all of the staff as well as some of the children I would be coaching. By the end of my first few days my head had become a blur of names, faces and who was who, but it was a good induction to the work I will be doing and gave me an insight in to some of the other work that people within the region are doing to help children and young people.

My working time since has been largely spent shadowing other Active Gloucestershire Community Sports coaches as well as planning sessions for my work programme. I have also attended a couple of Team Building Days. One was for all the Community Sports Coaches and involved some fun games and an introduction to some of the inclusion practices and games. The other was a Team Away Day for all members of Active Gloucestershire covering the latest Business Plan for the organisation as well as looking at our corporate identity.

My first delivery session was at the Gardners Lane play scheme. Fellow coach Michael Squire and myself were asked to run drop-in session. This was where parents and children came along and took part in a lot of fun games designed to help the children develop their Agility, Balance and Co-ordination as well as learning to co-operate and play. Having not much of an idea of how many people would be arriving we ended up delivering to about 50 people, which was challenging but also great fun, making me excited for the months ahead".

We Say Hello to...

Gillian TaylorGill Taylor - Finance and Resources Officer

Gill will be responsible for managing the financial, administrative, and resource needs of Active Gloucestershire. Diary of a Senior Competition Manager...

"Week one has come and gone like a flash. I have undertaken two very intensive training and development days with the Youth Sport Trust and all the other national Senior Competition Managers (SCMs). The eight national focus sports* were also invited to deliver to the cohort of SCMs.

We have already interviewed, and are in the process of appointing, our two Competition Managers (CMs) who will complete the Gloucestershire team and be working across the Cheltenham and Gloucester School Sports Partnerships and Cotswold & Stroud District School Sports Partnerships (SSPs).

It's a very interesting time to be involved in sports development and we are all excited about the partnerships to be formed with and through the county competition team...."
