Sport Makers - Background

Introduction

The Sport Makers programme is part of the People strand of Sport England's London 2012 mass participation legacy programme Places, People, Play.

Sports Makers is a nationwide campaign that will use the inspirational pull of London 2012 to recruit, train and deploy 40,000 new sports volunteers aged 16 years and over to make sport happen across the country. Sport Makers will have a positive and inspiring introduction to the world of sport volunteering via a series of workshops delivered locally by a training provider and in conjunction with Active Gloucestershire. It is anticipated that many will continue to volunteer, further increasing sport participation long after the 2012 Games are held in the UK.

Sport Makers will organise and support hundreds of thousands of new hours of grassroots sport, creating new opportunities across the country. The Sport Makers will bring the Olympic and Paralympic values to life in every community and will be a highly tangible element of the London 2012 legacy.

Sport Makers will be fully inclusive and target participants including young people who have a disability, both males and females and participants from BME groups.

The programme will deliver its first training workshops in September 2011 and the impact of the programme will be measured up until September 2013.

Aims

The overall aim of Sport Makers is to ensure that 50,000 potential volunteers attend inspirational workshops, with 40,000 of these being deployed into a sports leadership role for a minimum of 10 hours of volunteering. Of those deployed, 20,000 will continue to volunteer in sport beyond these 10 hours.

The specific targets for Gloucestershire are detailed below:

  • 580 potential volunteers attend inspirational workshops;
  • 457 of these deployed into a sports leadership role for a minimum of 10 hours of volunteering;
  • 228 continue to volunteer in sport beyond 10 hours.

Active Gloucestershire, as the County Sports Partnership will be responsible for the delivery of the Sport Makers programme and will perform the following roles:

  • identify, recruit and register potential volunteers;
  • develop a menu of Sport Makers volunteer opportunities, brokered with National Governing Bodies, Clubs and Community Organisations involved in sports participation;
  • organise a programme of inspirational workshops for the potential Sport Makers (the content and delivery of these will be supplied by an external training provider under a separate contract with Sport England);
  • match and support Sport Makers into volunteer placements.

Target Group and Criteria

The programme is aimed at those who are not currently choosing to volunteer in sport and are aged 16 years and over. Sport Makers initial ten hours of deployment need to be directly associated with increasing +16 participation. Examples might include: helping to organise a tournament, a festival, a league, a game that increases participation, supporting the delivery of activities with a qualified leader or coach, helping to deliver a participation event e.g. a fun run or open day at a local club, promoting sport participation to local company employees through presentations at staff meetings. Whilst the list isn't exhaustive it provides examples and it is anticipated that Sport Makers will aid the development of new and exciting volunteer roles that will play an active part in developing new 16+ participation opportunities for all.
