The strapline of sports coach UK says it all:
Great Coaching…Great Sport.
By becoming a coach, you can help people to take sport up for the first time, help club players improve their skills and also help those with exceptional talent to achieve their performance goals. To be a great coach, you need to brim with enthusiasm and care about your performers so you can help them realise their potential. You also need to know how the mind and body works and how people respond to exercise and competition. You should be a good communicator and able to be well organised.
To become a coach/instructor, you need to gain a coaching qualification from your sport’s national governing body. You can achieve these either directly through the NGBs, or as part of college or university courses that include coaching.
Click here for a list of NGBs on Sport England’s website.
An increasing number of University and FE Colleges provide study programmes in coaching. Click here to find out more information about coaching courses at Universities throughout the UK. Click here for a list of FE Colleges in Gloucestershire.
Another way to get started is to complete a Sports Leader Award. This is multi-sport award that develops skills, such as planning, preparing and delivering a sports session, as well as organisation and motivation and communication techniques. Click here for further information.
