Sport Makers

THIS YEAR ANYONE CAN BE A SPORTING HERO

You may not be able to run like Usain Bolt, dive like Tom Daley or swim like Rebecca Adlington, however, by becoming a Sport Maker you can still be part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sports legacy.

Inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games and their values, Sport Makers will organise and support thousands of new hours of grass roots sport and physical activity and create new opportunities across Gloucestershire.

What are Sport Makers?

Sport Makers are the people who make sport happen. They are the organisers , the 'doers', the ones you can rely on to get things started or keep them going,

Sport Makers can organise sport and physical activity informally for themselves and their friends by:

  • Taking some friends to Zumba sessions;
  • Organising a friendly tennis session for work colleagues;
  • Rounding up some mates for a regular 5-a-side football session.

Or maybe they won't take part themselves, but will do all those things that make sport and physical activity possible, such as:

  • Planning route or booking a facility;
  • Organising a fundraising fun-run;
  • Creating a multi-sport event or festival for the local community with other people.

In addition, Sport Makers can also support local clubs by:

  • Coaching or officiating;
  • Being a committee member;
  • Raising the clubs profile through Marketing and PR.

How do I become a Sport Maker?

To become a Sport Maker you have to be aged 16 or over and want to make sport and physical activity happen for people who are also aged 16 or over.

Becoming a Sport Maker is easy. First, register and create a profile at www.sportmakers.co.uk (this takes 5 minutes) and then sign up to attend a free and informal introductory workshop, where you will explore some of the benefits of being a Sport Maker. At the same session you will:

  • Work out how to get sport and physical activity sessions going with friends, colleagues or the community;
  • Find opportunities to get involved in making sport happen in your area.

After the workshop it is over to you to start making sport happen. Active Gloucestershire will support you with advice, information, connections and resources and you'll also get free Adidas kit!
